Quality Time with the Family
Quality family time is hard to come by, but take away the distractions of cell phones, the internet and television add sea kayaks, spectacular fjords and fun, family oriented guides and quality family time begins. Our 3 Day/2 Night family trips offer families with good physical fitness and a spirit of adventure the opportunity to explore the magnificent Misty Fjords National Monument while learning or improving your sea kayaking and back country camping skills as a family. Our friendly, naturalist guides take the stress out of family camping by providing all of the camping gear and planning delicious and nutritious meals. Our guides have extensive experience working with youth in outdoor programs and will involve the family in camp tasks wherever possible as well as providing fun, age appropriate activities for the kids. Both nights are spent at the same campsite which allows families to relax and immerse themselves in the wilderness without having to worry about covering specific distances in kayaks or spending too long camping in the temperate rainforest.
Family Trip Details
The trip combines sea kayaking, hiking and camping and is designed to be educational for both children and adults. Our goal is to involve the whole family in camp activities and to learn or improve both camping and kayaking skills. Our destination is Rudyerd Bay, the most spectacular of the Fjords where we will camp in tents and spend time exploring by sea kayak and on foot. We aim to return to town by 5:30 the trip's final day but can occasionally be delayed by weather.
Day One: Meet your guides and Captain at 9am and depart for your Misty Fjords sea kayaking adventure! The journey to Misty Fjords by boat is about two hours. We stop to see New Eddystone Rock along the way and keep a sharp eye out for wildlife. We arrive at Punchbowl Cove and set up camp together. After lunch we have a lesson in sea kayaking and explore the remarkable geological formations in Punchbowl Cove. Relax and explore the camp or help your guide prepare a delicious meal.
Day Two: After a hot breakfast we head up the trail to spectacular Punchbowl Lake.* The hike through the rainforest leads us amongst towering old growth trees and alongside dramatic waterfalls. The hike is challenging but more than worth the effort. When the forest service boat or canoe are available. we explore the lake and eat lunch on the shore. After descending from the lake there will be time to relax, pick berries for pancakes for tomorrow's breakfast, help cook dinner and build a campfire.
Day Three: Our final day is spent kayaking in Rudyerd Bay. For those who are interested, we may practice packing kayaks and paddle to either Point Louise or Checats Cove to be picked up. Groups with smaller children or wanting a more relaxed day, can paddle Rudyerd Bay and return to Punchbowl Camp for the pick up.
*The family trip usually camps at Punchbowl Cove, but is tide or weather conditions warrant some trips may camp in the South Arm and hike to Nooya Lake
