A Unique Way to Explore Misty Fjords
Every year, thousands of visitors see Misty Fjords from the air or the deck of a high speed catamaran but very few visitors ever get to spend more than 30 minutes in the Misty Fjords and fewer still set foot on the shore. Our Misty Fjords Day trip offers the unique opportunity to take a small boat to Misty Fjords National Monument and spend the enitre day immersed in the splendor and serenity of the wilderness. This trip is run as a charter only, the cost is $1499 for a group of up to six participants.

Paddling Rudyerd Bay South Arm

Getting there is Half the Fun
The day begins early in Ketchikan where we meet to get outfitted with paddling jackets and dry bags before boarding the boat for the Misty Fjords. In most weather, the journey to the Fjords is about 2 hours. We travel around Point Alava and into the Behm Canal. The boat ride allows time to learn about the area and watch for marine mammals along the way. We stop at New Eddystone Rock, a magnificent 200 foot tall rock formation before entering Rudyerd Bay, the most spectacular of the Fjords.

Kayaking in Rudyerd Bay
We drop anchor in Punchbowl Cove and unload our kayaks. Your guide will run through the basics of paddling and help you master the skills you need for the day. Our kayaks are stable fiberglass doubles. No prior experience is necessary to join our trip, however, we do kayak for 3 - 4 hours so participants should be physically fit. If you are not certain that you can paddle for 4 hours, we recommend the Orcas Cove/Misty Fjords Flightseeing Combination.

Once on the water in our kayaks, we paddle beneath the 3000 foot granite rock walls that the Misty Fjords are so well known for. Salmon streams tumble over rocky beds, waterfalls cascade down the cliffs and seabirds nest in the crevasses. The paddling pace is leisurely to allow time for photography and exploration.

Lunch is included and will be served picnic style on a wilderness beach. Afterwards we will have the chance to explore the shoreline rainforest. Wildlife in the Misty Fjords is diverse and, of course, cannot be guarenteed. We may encounter brown and black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, mountain goat, beaver, mink and marten along the shores. Misty Fjords is also home to an extraordinary array of migratory birds: at different times of the year, we may see loons, buffleheads, goldeneye, rufous hummingbirds and many different species of seabirds. In the water we often see harbor seals in the Fjords and we may even encounter Orcas or humpback whales on the boat journey.

Trip Details
Trip participants meet at 7:30am at Southeast Sea Kayaks' downtown store and will return to dock in Ketchikan between 5pm and 5:30pm in the evening. Paddling time is around 4 hours so participants should be in good physical condition and ideally will have some paddling experience. We do not recommend this trip for children under the age of 12 but we can plan a special family trip for groups of 4 - 6 with less strenuous sea kayaking. We recommend that guests dress in warm layers and bring some extra clothes for warmth on the boat ride home. We will provide you paddling jackets and pants, boots and dry bags so you can bring your cameras along to capture fantastic photos.

How to Book
Misty Fjords Day trip is avilable as a charter by reservation only. We can run the day trip any day of the week except Sunday. Please book ahead to avoid disappointment: our boat often books up months in advance and we are rarely able to run this trip with less than a week's notice. After the middle of August the weather is more challenging for the boat journey to the Fjords, but if you are staying in town for several days, we can plan the trip and allow a back up day for weather. We recognize that the cost of the trip can be prohibitive for groups of 1 or 2 but please email us: we will waitlist you for your dates and try to combine groups.
