Kayak Rentals for Experienced Kayakers
Southeast Sea Kayaks rents single and double kayaks to experienced sea kayakers for extended trips in Misty Fjords, USFS Cabin trips and paddling close to Ketchikan. Many people are used to renting sit on top kayaks from the beach in warm climates but Southeast Alaska is very different: due to the extremely cold water, cruise ship security regulations and traffic patterns in the Tongass Narrows we do not rent kayaks by the hour or half day from our dock in town. If you are travelling by cruise ship please book one of our tours which will allow you to see the best of Ketchikan within your time in port. For kayakers planning an extended visit to Ketchikan, we have top quality kayaks for rent and we also offer trip planning assistance, water taxi service and road transport for kayaks and kayakers. Kayaks and Equipment
We rent the kayaks that we love to paddle. Kayak rentals include paddles, spray skirts, life vests, paddle floats and bilge pumps. Rental price includes put-in at our downtown dock. Our single fiberglass and thermoform kayaks include Current Designs' Solstices, Solstice GTS, Pacific Watersports' Ospreys and Delta 17 and 18.5 Expeditions. Our double fiberglass kayaks are Current Designs Libra XTs and Unitys. Our single plastic kayaks are Current Designs Storms, Squalls, Sirroccos and Squamishes. We try to match paddlers to the best kayak for their size and ability. Renters may request a particular kayak and we will do our very best to honor the request. We also have 2 Nigel Dennis Romany Explorers available by request. Our paddles are lightweight low angle touring paddles made by Werner Paddles and Current Designs. We may also have high angle paddles available: please let us know of any special requests.
How Much Experience do We Need to Rent Kayaks?
Paddlers planning to rent sea kayaks should have experience paddling touring kayaks and be comfortable with techniques for getting in and out of kayaks on beaches and docks. It is essential that renters know how to perform wet exits with a spray skirt, have practiced self rescues and be confident in their ability to rescue themselves in cold water. Unless we have a personal knowledge of your experience and abilities, we have to leave it up to you to decide if you are competent to paddle in Alaskan waters. If you plan to kayak Misty Fjords it is also essential that you have backcountry camping skills and will be comfortable in a remote wilderness setting where help may not be immediately available. Rental Reservations and Policies
Call or email us or complete our online request form to receive a quote on your kayak rentals. Advance reservations are highly recommended as we have a limited number of rental kayaks.To reserve rental kayaks, we take a 50% deposit at the time of booking. The other 50% will be charged 14 days prior to the rental. The 50% deposit is non refundable for cancellations inside of 30 days. Cancellations outside of 30 days are refundable less a $25 cancellation fee. Renters must sign a waiver and file a float plan with us. Please give careful consideration to the dates you request for kayak rentals as we cannot refund for early returns of rental equipment. We keep a credit card number on file as a damage deposit: all damaged or lost equipment is the responsibility of the renter and will be charged at replacement cost.
Logistics
Kayak rentals are available during our regular business hours (usually 7am - 4pm daily during summer months) and include launch from our downtown dock, we also have water taxi and road transport services available. Once you arrive at our store, we will have you sign rental waivers and outfit you with PFDs and other safety gear.We usually have a can of white gas for filling stove bottles. Southeast Sea Kayaks is only a 20 minute walk or taxi ride from the Safeway Grocery Store and Tongass Marine Store which carries camping supplies, the Tatsuda's IGA is about 10 minutes from our store and takes phone orders and will deliver groceries for you. Please be aware that because tours are outfitted at the store, we have very limited space for packing and organizing inside but we do have plenty of space on the dock on dry days. A small space available to store luggage and items you do not wish to take to the Fjords, please check with us for larger groups or large items. If you plan to arrive by plane or ferry the same day as your rental, please consider making a back-up plan in the event that your flight or ferry is delayed or luggage is lost.
