Kayak Camps for Ketchikan Kids

Kids learn to kayak and have fun exploring the nearby islands.

Kayaking is a fantastic way for kids to get outdoors, get some exercise and learn about our unique environment. Southeast Sea Kayaks' kayak camps are specifically designed for Ketchikan kids. We aim to develop kayaking skills, confidence on the water and knowledge of the marine environment. The skills and safety practices learned apply not only to kayaking but also to boating in Southeast Alaska. Most importantly we aim for the kids to have fun! Kayak Camp for Kids 10 - 16 yrs

Duration: Mon - Fri 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Price: $139 per child

Kayak Camp Details

Each session includes a land lesson, warm up, games, snacks and paddling practice. On water practice will include learning boat handling techniques in both single and double kayaks and assisted rescue techniques. We kayak in the harbor, Ketchikan Creek and across the Tongass Narrows to Pennock Island. On some days we may stay in the harbor due to weather conditions. Participants who are comfortable on the water will have the opportunity to practice self-rescue in drysuits. We will also learn about marine radio communications and the essentials of kayak safety. Our goal is to plan and complete a paddle to Pennock Island, Gravina Island or at Orcas Cove on the final day. We are fortunate to have an excellent protected area for paddling in Thomas Basin, so the program runs every day no matter the weather. We have paddling jackets and rain pants for participants to wear on rainy days.

Master Class for Kids 12 - 16 yrs

Duration: Mon - Friday 1:30pm - 5pm

Price: $159 per child

Master Class Details

Master Class is for kids who have already completed kayak camp (or have some experience kayaking) and are ready to take their paddling to the next level. In this class kids will learn advanced paddling and rescue techniques; nautical rules of the road; ferrying; towing; and how to plan and prepare for a kayaking day trip. Kids will paddle both single and double kayaks. All participants will practice self rescues and assisted rescues in drysuits or wetsuits. On the final day we plan to paddle to Bugge Beach or Clam Cove depending on weather. Classes are 1:30 - 5pm Monday -  Friday. The Master Class is fun but physically demanding: kids will paddle for at least 2 hours each day with breaks and must be prepared to get in the water in a drysuit or wetsuit. If you have questions about your child's ability to participate please don't hesitate to call us.
